Uptake and metabolism of toxicants in the respiratory tract.

چکیده
The sites of uptake and retention of inhalants within the respiratory tract influence which tissues are susceptible to damage. Physical and chemical properties of inhalants, including size, water:air and oil:water partition coefficients, and reactivity or susceptibility to metabolism are the major factors that affect deposition and retention. The high metabolic capacity of the cells of the olfactory tissue and bronchiolar Clara cells contributes to their susceptibility to damage from both inhaled and bloodborne toxicants. The major enzymes that metabolize pesticides and many other potential toxicants are the cytochrome P450 and flavin-containing monooxygenases and the carboxylesterases.

Cryptosporidial Infection of Lower Respiratory Tract in a Budgerigar (Melopsittacus undulates)
Cryptosporial and bacterial co-infection is reported in a budgerigar with clinical manifestations of septicemia and respiratory tract infection. Microscopically large number of round to oval 2-5μm cryptosporidial organisms were found to be lodged on the parabronchial epithelial cells of the respiratory tract. The bacterial colonies were seen around the parabronchial spaces of the lung tissue. I...

Extraosseous accumulation of technetium-99m-methyl diphosphonate (99mTc-MDP) on bone scan is not common. This phenomenon is often attributed to abnormality of calcium metabolism and has been reported in a variety of conditions including metabolic diseases and malignancies. A five years old boy is presented here, who was admitted to the pediatric emergency suffering from fatigue, respiratory sym...
متن کاملAlterations in salivary IgA levels in infectious and inflammatory disorders of upper respiratory tract
Background: The airway surfaces are one of the most common ways of entry of infectious agents. Oral cavity associated lymphoid tissues are inductive site of humoral immune responses in inflammatory and infectious disorders of the upper respiratory tract. These lymphoid tissues play important roles in the induction of salivary IgA. The impact of upper respiratory tract diseases on salivary IgA p...
متن کاملMODULATION OF MITOCHONDRIAL UPTAKE OF A DENOSINE BY NITROBENZYLTHIOINOSINE
In this study the uptake and metabolism of adenosine by mitochondria has been investigated. Incubation of CEM cells mitochondria preparation with [3H] -adenosine showed substantial uptake and metabolism of adenosine. Adenosine was both anabolized to AMP, ADP and ATP, and also catabolized to inosine. The highest concentration of metabolites in extracted mitochondria was due to AMP. The mito...
متن کاملClinical Value of Toll Like Receptor 4 and CD14 in Children with Acute Lower Respiratory Tract Infection
Toll like receptors (TLRs) with a myeloid differentiation antigen (CD14) recognize and bind various structures from invading microbes and then trigger cell activation. They initiate a variety of effectors' functions, including cytokine secretion, proliferation, co-stimulation or phagocyte maturation. The aim of this study was to evaluate Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) and CD14 expression in childr...
